Katrina and what we learned about disaster recovery

As we look at the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, many things come to mind: the destruction, the loss of life, the loss of property, and the inability to function on any level.

The one thing I remember about the most devastating hurricane to hit the United States in recorded history, was the calls to credit unions. There were calls prior to the flooding, calls during the storm, and calls through out the recovery efforts of our Louisiana and Mississippi credit unions. Some said “we are good, we have been through this before, and we appreciate the call”. And others told me “Katrina hit us like no storm did in ages”.

This is the time to remember that it can happen to any of us! And we must have a Disaster Recovery Policy, procedures and practices in place for our members. As a credit union we have to be there to support our members in their time of need.

And all of us at FedComp are here to assist you in that planning with…

  • Disaster Recovery option
  • Off-Site Dynamic Storage option
  • The Hosted option and the Platinum System

We need to remember that hard copies of documents can be destroyed. You told me that you have waterproof safes etc., but if they are sitting under 12 feet of water, they are not going to do you any good.

You told me that hurricanes don’t happen in my part of the country but to that I say, “what about Tornadoes, Fires,
Dust Storms , Snowstorms, Ice storms , Blizzards, Flooding, Nor’easters, and earthquakes?”

Be prepared, it never hurts to have a little extra insurance!

We are here to support you and your members, let’s talk about how you can protect your precious data so that you can continue to serve your members.
